Manor Monthly – January & February 2017

The Manor has had a lot of changes in the last few months! We said good bye to our beloved Recreation Director, Barbara. We wish her a happy retirement, and hope she comes back to visit us often!

We had a Valentine/Retirement party to see Barbara off on this next chapter in her life. She will be missed by all. We all enjoyed listening to Leo “tickle the ivory”. He treated us to some lovely tunes on the keyboard. Afterward we enjoyed pink cake and candy on pretty pink plates, and exchanged valentines.

We surprised Barbara with a giant card that everyone signed, and yelled “HAPPY RETIREMENT” when she came out of the back room!

Our new Recreation Director, Wendy, has been keeping us busy.

Sheila, Enid, Marilyn, Darlene and Ron painted beautiful designs on glass vases and filled them with flowers while listening to beautiful music.

Marilyn, Eugene, Janet and Sue learned how to make a wool felt ladybug. They came out so cute!

We have also been working on some lovely artwork to decorate the home. It can be seen in the hallway next to the living room. Sue and Janet used watercolor and pencils to make beautiful peacock pictures.

Some of the ladies have rediscovered their love for crochet. Sue and Janet have been working on beautiful afghans.

Residents Leo, Marilyn, Janet, Bill, Ron, and José had a delicious meal at China Buffet, one of our favorite places! We also enjoyed lunch at Rizvani’s, with Marilyn, Janet, Bill, Ron and José.

Olga, José, Ron, Enid, Janet, Marilyn, Darlene and Sheila loved playing a special Valentine game of BINGO, with a $5 full card prize! Ron won the grand prize, congratulations Ron! Enid, Olga, Marilyn and Sheila won $1 single games.

Marilyn and Janet enjoyed some pampering with manicures, they look so pretty!

Bill and Ron indulged their literary senses with a trip to the library. Bill loves Robert Frost, and Ron is interested in magic and magical creatures.

We played a very challenging game of indoor mini golf at the Woodbury Senior center. Residents Leo, José and Sue had a so much fun! Leo surprised us all by being an excellent mini golfer!  We nicknamed him “Tiger!”

We played a fun game of Pokeno, with Ron, Janet and Sheila all tying for the grand prize! Congratulations to all! Olga, Janet, José, Marilyn and Darlene also joined in on the game.

Residents Ron, Vinnie, José, Janet, Bill and Leo enjoyed a wonderful lunch at the Farm shop, followed by a trip to Hosking’s Greenhouse and gift shop.

We got outside and enjoyed the sunshine with a g eat game of bowling on the front walk. Ron, Leo, Jose, Marilyn, Janet and Sheila all earned a quarter for knocking down the pins. (Or at least trying©) Marilyn especially loved bowling; she is really good at it! We got some good exercise, and really worked up a sweat! Afterwards we went back in the house and cooled off with some ice cream with chocolate syrup on top.

We all had a lot of fun celebrating Mardi Gras. We learned about the history of the holiday. It is a big party the day before Ash Wednesday, to signify the beginning of Lent. We made beautiful masks, decorated with sparkles and feathers. Then we enjoyed jazz music while we ate mini “King Cakes” a traditional Mardi Gras treat (a cinnamon sticky bun festively decorated with purple, green and gold sugar, the colors of Mardi Gras).

After our party, Darlene, Janet, Sheila, Olga, and Marilyn played Pokeno. Janet won 25 cents, as well as the grand prize of $1.00! Sheila and Olga both won 25 cents.

After lunch, Marilyn, Jose and Leo enjoyed the beautiful weather with a walk at Veteran’s park. We all got a little exercise. As José said, we will sleep well tonight!

We all have a little bit of spring fever, and are looking forward to getting outside with the warmer weather! We have lots of fun outings planned for the coming months, so stay posted to see what we are up to next time!

I would like to extend a big thank you to Mary Mcleod, manager of the Red Barn Thrift shop, for donating new craft supplies and games to the manor.
